Center for Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative therapy available at the Center is an application of mesenchymal stem cells extracted from fatty tissue (AdMSCs) in to the joints of patients with damaged cartilage, i. e. of patients with osteoarthritis, a chronic joint disease characterized by degeneration of the joint cartilage and the surrounding bones, causing systemic pain and stiffness. Treatment results indicate the effect of AdMSCs on chondrocytes through several key mechanisms, including the release of trophic factors that inhibit cell death and formation of scar tissue, and stimulate formation of new blood vessels and other tissue through their mitogenic (proliferative) effect, leading to repair of damaged tissue or even complete regenerative effect.

St. Catherine Specialty Hospital has pioneered this treatment in the South-East Europe, at its Center for regenerative medicine. The benefits of the treatment are:

  • Innovative, minimally invasive treatment
  • Relieves all types of joint pain, including osteoarthritis and other degenerative conditions
  • Promotes the body's natural ability to heal itself
  • Help athletes heal faster after injuries
  • Helps avoid joint replacement surgeries and long recovery periods
  • Stem cells
  • Adipocytes
  • Pericytes
  • Muse Cells

How does it work? Patient’s own powerful fat has reparative cells inside - therapy transfers the tissue that contains a variety of structures of cells including:

These cells inside of the fat stay intact and act to repair, restructure, replace to cushion and support the tissue during the repair, replacement, or reconstruction of damaged or injured tissue. The Autologous Micro-Fragmented Adipose Tissue with Mesenchymal stem cells procedure keeps all the cells intact and allows them to work like they do naturally inside a body, without the need for any additional materials (such as enzymes or scaffolds). That's what makes this procedure different!

Patient’s own powerful fat has 100-500x more reparative cells than other similar therapies. This procedure is the only technology that is FDA cleared for use in orthopedics.
